An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer's language.

Your computer's operating system (OS) manages all of the software and hardware on the computer. Most of the time, there are many different computer programs running at the same time, and they all need to access your computer's central processing unit (CPU), memory, and storage.

You can, but your computer would stop working because Windows is the operating system, the software that makes it tick and provides a platform for programs, like your web browser, to run on. Without an operating system your laptop is just a box of bits that do not know how to communicate with one another

The main goal of an operating system (OS) is to provide usable hardware abstractions to software. ... The hardware provides a disk drive of some kind, and the OS refines this by managing files on the disk. For software cooperation, the OS does the same abstraction work with the hardware's processor (or CPU).

How does the operating system manage hardware and peripheral devices?
Device management controls peripheral devices by sending them commands in their proprietary command language. The software routine that deals with each device is called a "driver," and the OS requires drivers for each of the peripherals attached to the computer.

What is the importance of the operating system in a computer? What is its function?
An operating system is just that, a way to operate your system. Drivers are included in this as well as all base level functions. Without an operating system, applications would have nowhere to run. This means no computerized word processing, internet access, audio format playback, video playback or any other daily interaction with a computer.
We'd basically be back to the days of our grandparents or earlier.

Operating System (OS) software is a set of programs that manage computer hardware resources and provide common services for application software. It acts as an interface between the hardware and the programs requesting I/O. It is the most fundamental of all system software programs. Its roles include hiding the complexities of hardware from the user, managing between the hardware's resources which include the processors, memory, data storage and I/O devices, handling "interrupts" generated by the I/O controllers, and sharing of I/O between many programs using the CPU.
